Staff Profile

BIO
Hubert G. Msuya earned his Master’s degree in Electronics Engineering and Information Technologies from the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) in 2013 and a Bachelor's degree in Electronics Science and Communications from the same institution in 2008. His MSc research focused on enhancing internet laboratories by integrating a low-cost switching system into the NI ELVIS II+ iLab Shared Architecture platform. Currently, he is pursuing a PhD in Electronics Engineering and Information Technology at UDSM, with a research focus on model parameter compression strategies for multimodal deep learning-based models.
Mr. Msuya joined UDSM's Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering (ETE) Department as a Tutorial Assistant in 2009 and currently serves as an Assistant Lecturer. His responsibilities include teaching undergraduate (UG) students, supervising final-year UG projects, conducting academic research, and offering consulting and public services. Additionally, he served as the departmental examination officer from 2013 to 2018.
His research interests include image processing, e-learning—specifically the development of online laboratories for ICT-mediated electrical and electronics experiments—and deep neural networks, with a focus on parameter compression algorithms for multimodal deep-learning-based models. He has contributed to several research projects at UDSM, including: The iLab Africa Project (2009–2013), WB STHEP1-AF (Enhancing secondary school science and mathematics teaching through ICT, 2014–2016), Africa Digital School Initiatives (2017–2018), and Signal Processing Research Group (SPRG) Projects.
He has also participated in numerous career-development workshops, including: Animation using Action Script 3.0 (Nairobi, Kenya, January 2015), Software Defined Radio Training (CoICT, UDSM, Tanzania, April 2014), Advanced Wireless Technologies Training (CoICT, UDSM, Tanzania, December 2013), Online Laboratory Workshop (Makerere University, Uganda, July 2011), ISA Usage for Online Labs Training (MIT, USA, April–May 2011), Moodle Learning Management System Training (Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, January 2011), International Workshop on iLab (Makerere University, Uganda, November 2009).
Mr. Msuya teaches a range of undergraduate courses at UDSM, including Fundamentals of Signals and Systems, Electronic Control, Digital Signal Processing, Digital Electronics Practical, and Practical in Electronics.
Apart from his academic activities, Mr. Msuya is also involved actively in live sound engineering, providing professional audio services for different events and concerts. His expertise includes sound system setup, mixing, and audio optimisation to ensure high-quality sound production for live performances, corporate events, and other public gatherings.
RESEARCH
Mr Msuya joined the University of Dar es Salaam, in the Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering (ETE) department as a Tutorial Assistant in 2009. Currently, he is an Assistant Lecturer in the ETE department. His main responsibilities include teaching undergraduate (UG) students, supervising UG students' final year projects, doing academic research, and providing consulting and public services. He also spent five years as a departmental examination officer (2013-2018). Image Processing, e-learning—specifically, building online laboratories (hosting ICT-mediated electrical and electronics experiments), and Deep Neural Networks—with an emphasis on parameter compression algorithms for multimodal data fusion based on deep learning—are among his research interests. He has also been involved in a number of research projects at UDSM, including,
- The iLab Africa project (2009 – 2013);
- WB STHEP1-AF for retooling secondary school science and mathematics teachers with the use of ICT in teaching (2014 – 2016);
- Africa Digital School Initiatives (2017 – 2018), and;
- Signal Processing Research Group (SPRG) projects.
Some of the undergraduate courses he teaches are Fundamentals of Signals and Systems, Electronic Control, Digital Signal Processing, Digital Electronics Practical, and Practical in Electronics (an introductory course).
