Program Description

Philosophy

This programme emphasizes the use of innovative teaching methods and technologies and provides a strong focus on research and development that keeps pace with the advancement in telecommunications technologies. It provides the current trends and demands in the telecommunication industry.

Objectives

This programme aims to produce Telecommunication Engineering specialists of intellectual standard and high calibre who can analyse, design, manage and operate telecommunications systems to meet current and future needs in the field of communication engineering both in Tanzania and internationally. The Master in Telecommunication Engineering curriculum has been developed to fulfil the following: 

  1. Provide the theoretical background and applied knowledge that they need to practice as telecommunications engineers;
  2. Develop the technological and competitive skills needed in the design and engineering of modern communications systems and networks;
  3. Integrate telecommunications and networking technologies and engineering systems using their generalist and broader knowledge in multidisciplinary contexts;
  4. Acquire the ability to innovate, develop, direct, coordinate and technically manage projects in the fields of communications and networks;
  5. Provide the knowledge to contribute to research, innovation, and technological advancements through independent projects and collaborative efforts; and
  6. Provide a gateway to doctoral studies in telecommunication engineering.

Qualification

General Minimum Entry Requirements for Admission 

UDSM is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment of mutual respect. University welcomes women and men, including those with disabilities, with the following minimum qualifications:

  1. UQF level 8 in undergraduate studies in a relevant field with at least a second-class degree and a minimum GPA of 2.7/5.0 from a reputable institution recognized by TCU; Or
  2. A postgraduate diploma in a relevant field from a reputable institution recognized by TCU or NACTVET with at least an upper second-class B+ award and a minimum GPA of 3.5/5.0. Candidates with equivalent qualifications Or as the entry requirement may be updated by the University of Dar es Salaam and TCU or NACTVET.

 Programme Specific Entry Requirements for Admission

UQF level 8 with a background in Telecommunication Engineering, Electronics Science and Communications, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering will be considered at least a second-class degree with a minimum GPA of 2.7/5.0 from a reputable institution recognized by TCU.

Career Prospect

We produce graduates that can harness opportunities in a wide range of telecommunications industries and institutions. Our graduates have, for instance, found opportunities in mobile telephone operators, manufacturers and vendors of telecom equipment. Some graduates have established their own startups, spinoffs, and companies that provide quality telecom services to the Tanzanian community.

Outcomes

Knowledge

Graduates of MSc in Telecommunication Engineering will have acquired knowledge to:

  1. Thorough understanding of scientific principles and awareness of the most recent technologies, tools and applications in Telecommunication engineering fields;
  2. Explain mathematical and computer models in the telecommunication discipline and an appreciation of their limitations;
  3. Explain concepts from a range of areas, including technical and management skills and the ability to apply them effectively in engineering projects. 

Skills

Graduates of MSc Telecommunications Engineering will have developed skills in:

  1. Developing and using mathematical   and   computer-based   models   for   solving problems in electronics and information technology;
  2. Making audio/visual/written presentations to convey a body of technical information in a coordinated and comprehensive manner;
  3. Integrating telecommunication engineering knowledge in the engineering systems using their generalist and broader knowledge in multidisciplinary contexts; and
  4. Coordinating and technically managing projects in the fields of communications, networks, and electronics.

Competency

 Graduates of MSc Telecommunication Engineering will demonstrate ability to:

  1. Use fundamental knowledge to investigate new and emerging technologies;
  2. Apply mathematical and computer-based models for solving problems in telecommunication engineering and ability to assess the limitations of particular cases;
  3. Generate an innovative design for products, systems, components or processes to fulfil new needs; and
  4. Apply engineering techniques, taking into account a range of commercial and industrial constraints.
