DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRONICS AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS ENGINEERING

COLLEGE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES

UNIVERSITY OF DAR ES SALAAM

Background

The Department of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering (ETE) was formally established as one of the departments of the newly formed College of Information and Communication Technologies (CoICT). The college was formed after merging the former School of Informatics and Communication Technologies (SICT) with the former Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering (ECSE) from the College of Engineering and Technology (CoET). The formation of the college was approved by the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) Council on 27th January, 2011.

The formation of the ETE Department has brought together the activities and staff from two Units, namely Telecommunications Engineering Unit (TEU) and Electronics and Communication Unit (ECU). The history of the two Units can be traced back as follows:

TEU

1973: The Department of Electrical Engineering was established as part of the Faculty of Engineering (FoE). One of the sections in the Department was Electronics and Telecommunications (ET) Section.

2001: The Department of Electrical Engineering was changed into the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering (ECSE), which had three Departments, including the Department of Telecommunications Engineering.

2008: The Departments of Telecommunications Engineering (TE), Computer Systems Engineering (CSE), and Electrical Engineering (EE) were combined to form the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering (ECSE) within the College of Engineering and Technology (CoET). TE remained as a unit.

2011: Telecommunication Engineering Units was combined with ECU to form the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering within CoICT.

ECU

1981: Establishment of a special undergraduate degree program in Applied Physics (Electronics) within the Department of Physics.

1994: Establishment of undergraduate degree program in Electronic Science and Communication.

2005: Establishment of the Department of Electronics and Communication (DoEC) within the Faculty of Informatics and Virtual Education (FIVE).

2008: DoEC re-named as Electronics and Communication Unit (ECU) within the School of Informatics and Communication Technology (SICT).

2011: Electronics and Communication Unit was combined with TEU to form the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering within CoICT.
