BSc Electronics Engineering

Objectives and contents

The BSc in Electronics Engineering (BSc ELE) is a four (4) years undergraduate programme. The programme is intended to train students in Electronics Science and Engineering and equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to design, implement, manage and maintain Electronics Engineering systems. Each academic year is organized into two (2) semesters each of fifteen (15) instruction weeks and two (2) examinations weeks. The programme is made of a number of courses from the following areas: Communication skills, Mathematics, Development studies, Scientific Research Methods, Electronics science, Electronics engineering, Communication engineering, Professional ethics, Entrepreneurship, Human Resource Management and Computer science.  Specifically, the programme aims to:

  1. To equip students with the fundamental and advanced concepts of Electronics Engineering technologies and the application of these concepts to advance the state of technology and to meet the needs of the electronics industry.

  2. To enable students to develop appropriate electronics analytical models based on given specifications.

  3. To enable students to design, implement, test, and use measurement equipment for electronic systems based on given specifications.

  4. To enable students to make effective use of key electronics test and measurement equipment.

  5. To enable students to demonstrate scientific research skills.

  6. To enable students to demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills in making an audio/visual/written presentation to convey a body of technical information in a coordinated and comprehensive manner.

  7. To enable students to demonstrate effective leadership and decision-making skills.

  8. To demonstrate key principles and skills that enable students to practice as responsible Electronics engineers through courses in professional ethics, legal issues, and entrepreneurship.

Upon completion of the programme, graduates will be able to:

  1. Describe fundamental and advanced concepts of Electronics engineering technologies and apply them to further advance the state of technology and meet the needs of the electronics industry.

  2. Develop appropriate electronics analytical models based on given specifications.

  3. Design, implement, test, and use measurement equipment for electronic systems based on given specifications.

  4. Make effective use of key electronics test and measurement equipment.

  5. Demonstrate scientific research skills.

  6. Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills in making presentations to convey a body of technical information in a coordinated and comprehensive manner.

  7. Demonstrate effective leadership and decision-making skills.

  8. Demonstrate skills in professional ethics, legal issues, and entrepreneurship.

Electronics Engineer

A candidate shall be deemed eligible for consideration for admission to a first-degree BSc in Electronics Engineering programme of the University of Dar es Salaam if the candidate has one of the following qualifications:

Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E.) or equivalent, with passes in FIVE approved subjects THREE of which must be at Credit level obtained prior to sitting for the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A.C.S.E.E.) or equivalent; 

and

Two principal level passes in appropriate subjects in the A.C.S.E.E. or equivalent with total points from three subjects not below 2 based on the following grade to point conversion scale: A = 5; B = 4; C = 3; D = 2; E = 1; S = 0.5 and F = 0 point. [Note: Principal level passes in Divinity/Islamic Knowledge are not counted]

Or

An appropriate equivalent Diploma of not less than Second class/Credit level or B grade obtained from a college that is fully registered by NACTE and approved by the UDSM Senate. For Diplomas that are further classified into Upper and Lower classes, the requirement shall be an Upper Second class or B+ average.

Note: Applicants from countries that follow an 8-4-4 education system need to complete at least one year of study at a university in their own countries before they can be considered for admission into the University of Dar es Salaam.

The school fee for this programme is TZS 1,500,000 for Tanzanian Nationals per year and USD 3,500 for Non-Tanzanian Nationals. The fee can be paid per academic year or by instalments per semester.
